Community College East Gippsland Action Research

Stage One: Planning and preparation

What are the positives and negatives of converting current SFH to / delivering SFH as an online course?

PROJECT STAGE 1: Planning and preparation:

Developing the course and providing the teacher with support in both faciltation skills, content development and proficiency with Live Classroom.

Actions: Preparation (List actions as you identify them)

  1. Confirmation of course to be delivered, with trainer and delivery dates locked in.
  2. Convert SFH content to online format.
  3. Content developed with support from CCEG admin staff.
  4. Organisation of facilitation skills training: Gippstafe faciltiation course as well as 1:1 sessions in Live Classroom.
  5. Regular contact with Josie for advice and support.
  6. Trial LC session with Josie.
  7. Junita traveling to Melbourne to attend food safety trainers work shop to ensure content will be current.
  8. Determination of the technical requirements for the regional centres where the course will be delivered.
  9. Investigation of the possibility of developing support materials on the TAFE VC
  10. Investigate how much it will cost to run LC and train online from home using broadband.

Achievements (List them as they happen and when)

  1. Four sets set of Powerpoint slides (one for each lesson) have been completed
  2. Junita the sfh trainer has access to LC from home and has played in there to familiarise herself with the environment. (July)
  3. Junita the trainer and Jan the programs manager both enrolled in Gippstafe online faciltiation course and the Live classsroom training sessions in August.
  4. Jan and Junita attend Access ACE workshop in Melbourne
  5. Solved Assessment issues
  6. Three test trials with Clint helped understand the Live Classroom
  7. Uploaded PowerPoints into LiveClassroom admin
  8. Created polls that can be used as assessments
  9. Found out how to turn the assessment polls in to word documents so they may be saved as evidence
  10. Uploaded some humerous photos and developed some trivia and facts.
  11. Sent out workbooks to students via email
  12. Sent out research activity with live link to web site
  13. Found out that LiveClassroom actually keeps a record of Polls for future reference

  1. Trial LC session (even with Josie) was a disaster - audio and slides did not work well - had to rethink.
  2. Slides and information to be chunked.
  3. Investigating the possiblilty of setting up a companion site in TAFE VC. - Not undertaken at this stage - something to think about in the future
  4. Junita had to redo PowerPoints and change photos - discovered that we should be paying royalties for a number we had used from the web
  5. Test trial for 3rd August went well - Junita's home computer crashed but able to return on time
  6. LiveClassroom training sessions with Clint have been an excellent learning tool
  7. Junita feels that the LiveClassroom is really user friendly and comfortable to use - so does Jan
  8. Great to see that despite the technical glitches our students remained enthusiastic and commited
  9. Audio problems seemed to be the main difficulty
  10. We don't think the glitches are anything to do with distance - more like a simple setting that has been overlooked

THE LAST THOUGHT: Resolutions (If I were to do this again, at this stage I'd...)

  • Check that the royalty free photos I used were free. Only use my own photos. (Junita)
  • Maintain regular contact with students before / during / after (Jan)
