Upper Beaconsfield CC Action Research Project Stage 1: Planning and preparation

How can we make ICT non-threatening, comfortable/ fun/easy

Planning and preparation: developing the course and providing the teacher with support:

Identify the gaps in ICT knowledge skills of students. - Survey/Questionnaire

We have surveyed our students with the attached questionnaire.(Computer Questionnaire.doc)

Results were:
7 out of 11 - have a computer and an email address
3 of those have basic skills, 1 average, 3 have good skills. Only 1 did not know how to search on the internet.

3 students do not have a computer at home.
1 has basic computer skills
2 wish to have an email account set up for them.

Only 2 students did not want a free email account established.

Indications after the survey are that 3 (out of 11) of the students do not appear keen on computers.

Actions: Preparation (List actions as you identify them)

Design course to meet needs
Identify appropriate web sites - wike, moodle

Wiki site will be the focus.
Developing the lesson plan the challenge, to engage our perceived reluctant students. (5 Sep 07)

Achievements (List them as they happen and when)

Survey completed August 2007.
Wiki space commenced August 2007. http://ubccagedcaremon2007.wikispaces.com Definately a work in progress, but happy with its development to date.

Sept 07
Much happy with wiki. Had a meeting with Isabella (tutor of Aged Care). She has been on and explored the wiki page. Discussed where to from here, Isabella to load homework just before class commences so that students do not download homework and not come to class. Isabella feels that given the demographic enrolled for Aged Care asking them to participate in the "blog" environment would be too threatening to some students. So as not to intimidate and thereby exclude the students we have decided to leave this exercise as an activity to initiate the students to the possiblities of the internet and use it as a research tool, and to use the wiki page as a means for them to obtain homework and additional research material in the way of web sites of interest.

First class is scheduled for 8 October. 2.5 hour afternoon class. Isabella to welcome students back to Aged Care, they are currently doing first aid, reaquaint and get comfortable, after lunch computers.
Lesson Plan -
  • introduce computers.
  • internet - search and locate pages
  • wiki space
  • how to download and print homework pages
Reflect and assess on how session went to decide if a second session warranted at this point.
Computer tutor would return the following week during the lunch break to assist any student wanting additional help. If we need an extra class, this could be done in the second or third week of the module.

From this point on, homework will be available from the wiki page. Students will need to access it from home, or at the Centre during their lunch break or at the end of the day (computer room to be left intentionally free from bookings to allow for this).

19 September - project has infinite possiblities for other classes, but need to be very mindful of computer skills being brought to the arena. Wiki page development and usage should reflect need of computer literacy in workplace.

Evidence/Data Collection

Timetable? Sample content? Enrolments? E-mails? Publicity brochures? Photos?

Aug 07 - surveyed students as to computer knowledge
Sep 07 - assessed results of survey
- prepared lesson plan: discussed with Aged Care tutor, and seeking validation from outside source
- prepare notes for Aged Care tutor to be able to successfully load to the wiki space.

THE LAST THOUGHT: Resolutions (If I were to do this again, at this stage I'd...)
