Please tell us a little about the learners in your community that will benefit for your proposed blended learning i nitiative.
The students who will benefit most are at intermediate or advanced level in our courses, mostly but not exclusively NESB women. Currently they miss many classes because of commitments with children and other dependant family members.

What is your particular challenge or challenges with this learner group(s)
These students are exceptionally committed and usually focused on training to obtain skills to improve employability. They wish to attend multiple high level classes and the homework classes that we run, but often they can’t.
They have low income and usually low formal education. They are invariably busy at home with children, sick relatives, and sometimes extended family commitments. They are also looking for casual work and often miss classes if work becomes available. If they have computers at home, these are low-value, old or obsolete computers.
Blended education is something that we have discussed with them and we have been considering a number of strategies to develop this.
This AccessACE project provides a practical way forward to support these students.


Blended learning as a solution


Which ACFE funded course will you be targeting for this e-learning initiative?
We have decided to target our Multimedia Level 1 (MM1) class and Office Skills Level 1 (OS1) class as the courses that would benefit most from this initiative. However we would expect benefits to flow to all our computer classes.

How do you think technology may assist in this?
We expect a number of benefits, including:
  • The development and publication of web based education materials that are accessible from home or during homework classes.
  • The evaluation, selection and training to use a simple interface to access web based education materials from home or during homework classes.
  • Sufficient standardisation, training and support so that access to materials is available even if computers at home are old or obsolete.
  • Support for a web based discussion areas that will allow students to continue developing cooperative projects from home or during homework classes.

What will the potential benefits be for your organisation and the learners?
The major benefit will be that students who presently miss many classes and get discouraged will be able to keep up to date to still feel part of class thanks to blended education strategies. We expect these students will complete their classes and advance in their computer knowledge and employability.
As our students are usually a “barefoot educator” in their family or community, this may extend the use of our material beyond our student population to some family members or other members of their community.
