Your community

Please tell us a little about the learners in your community that will benefit for your proposed blended learning initiative.

The learners who will benefit are 10 students studying Certificate II (3 of them) and Certificate III (7 of them) in a combined Community Services Work class. This is an entry level VET course that serves as an introduction to working in a wide range of community services areas. The students are a diverse group.
  • One has an acquired brain injury
  • Two have intellectual disabilities
  • All but two of the students have quite low levels of computer literacy.

What is your particular challenge or challenges with this learner group(s)
  • Oral and written communication for 4 of them
  • Computer literacy skills for 8 of them combined with a reluctance (if not quite a resistance) to learning IT skills
  • Developing a genuine understanding of community development and other theoretical concepts of community

Blended learning as a solution

Which ACFE funded course will you be targeting for this e-learning initiative?

Certificate II and Certificate III in Community Services Work

How do you think technology may assist in this?
  • Increase general computer literacy skills by using technology for a specific purpose (including the formation of an online student community of practice) not just for the sake of learning IT skills
  • Tools such as digital storytelling and a Wiki may provide those with oral and written challenges with alternative forms of presenting their assessment tasks.Tools such as digital storytelling and a Wiki may provide those with oral and written challenges with alternative forms of presenting their assessment tasks.
  • By using a wiki to develop an online community of practice for the students it will assist them to reflect on and experience the concept of community.
What will the potential benefits be for your organisation and the learners?
  • Our tutors will further develop their skills in the use of e-learning tools
  • We will further our strategic plan to develop online components for all the accredited courses that we offer
  • Our learners will enhance their technological literacy and gain an appreciation of the fact that it is as much (if not more) about communicating and creating community as it is about using computer software packages.
