Please tell us a little about the learners in your community that will benefit for your proposed blended learning initiative.
Community College East Gippsland has a long standing partnership with the Bendoc community in East Gippsland. Bendoc is a remote community with limited employment prospects. In fact the pub is the greatest employer in the immediate area. There is a real need in the community for the basic food handling course, as it is a prerequisite to obtaining employment in the pub. In fact, during 2006 CCEG had organized for a trainer to go up and do the training face-to face but then the pub closed. Now that the pub is fully operational again, the Bendoc Progress Association is keen to offer this course in partnership with CCEG. CCEG is planning to offer a fully online course in food handling in partnership with Bendoc Progress Association.

What is your particular challenge or challenges with this learner group(s)
Distances in East Gippsland make delivering training to small groups in these remote area very time consuming and expensive.
It involves travel on treacherous roads as well as overnight accommodation. Offering the course flexibly would in fact reduce the costs to the community.


Blended learning as a solution

Which ACFE funded course will you be targeting for this e-learning initiative?
CCEG is proposing to offer a four hour food handling course fully online.

It will be delivered in 4 x 1 hour session via a virtual classroom – fully synchronous supported by a TAFE VC module.
How do you think technology may assist in this?
ACFE has funded access to Live Classroom in 2007 for ACE organisations. CCEG is the managing agent for this initiative. Bendoc Progress Association has excellent satellite broadband access which makes delivery via Live Classroom a realistic option. CCEG is keen to encourage participants to come to the centre for the sessions. They feel that it is important for the students to have face to face contact at the centre and it will give them the opportunity to establish a learning circle for this course. Having said this, participants will have the option of doing the course from home as well.
What will the potential benefits be for your organisation and the learners?
  • For the learners in these remote communities is means access to training and skills development which leads to jobs in the community.
  • For the smaller partner organisations it means that they can deliver their ACFE hours successfully.
  • Participation in this project give CCEG and opportunity to trial a fully distance online model.
  • This will be an excellent opportunity for the trainer to develop skills in online delivery and facilitation.
